I am logic-oriented with a science degree. I retired in 1999 after a 30-yr career as an environmental consultant, with experience in general ecology, botany, vertebrates, aquatic invertebrates, wetlands and imperiled species. The last 13 of those years were spent working my own consulting company. I now use that experience in selected local environmental conflicts and in managing 14 nature preserves for a national caving organization.
I am chairing the August 2008 convention for that same caving group, with an expected attendance of ~900. Years ago I donated 2 acres to another national conservation organization containing the only known locality of an imperiled cave species. I am active in FL cave club leadership and am a frequent contributor of cave magazine articles. I have participated in caving expeditions abroad and will do so in the future.
I may have retired too soon, financially. I thought I had enough $$$ to retire and I was really tired of my job, so I cut and ran. The stock market has not treated me well lately, and my ex set me back a little, dollar-wise, so I am in a frugal mode.
I want to see a lot more of the USA, Canada and Latin American after the Aug 2008 convention, which isnít enough time to justify buying a house right now, and the idea of throwing away money on rent is unacceptable, so I am now living in a travel trailer. The trailer is small, but itís not so bad. Itís set in an RV park beside a large lake that is neither overdeveloped nor eutrophic. The park is heavily shaded, and quiet except for the sandhill cranes trumpeting nearly all day long.
I enjoy flatwater canoeing, off-road bicycling, caving, scuba and nature walks. Previously was into whitewater kayaking and rock climbing, but theyíre too far away. I am an avid gardener. I prefer restaurants that serve seafood and/or ethnic foods like Mexican, Thai and Italian, esp. one-offs. I dearly love performing arts such as national dance troupes, music concerts, mime & acrobatics. I enjoy travel to karst regions. Favorite things: cheap travel, adventures, reading, writing, gardening, scuba and sitting around a cheery campfire on a nippy nite chatting with my sweetie and friends while consuming adult beverages after a day of outdoor adventure sports.
